Reading Round Up #1 | Kid Lit

My reading journey began many, many moons ago. Okay… technically I’m only 28, but that counts as many moons!

I can remember my dad reading to me. I can remember picking up books, looking at the pictures, and making up my own stories about the books before I learned to read. Reading has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

Today I wanted to start a series. I’m calling it Reading Round Up. For each post, I will talk about different books that helped shape my reading life. Today’s discussion is Kid Lit.

Kid Lit to me is any book that can be considered a short story. While, generally speaking, Kid Lit can encompass chapter books I’m not including them in this article. This discussion is exclusively about shorter stories. I guess I would consider Kid Lit to be any book that a family member, teacher, or guardian would read to a child ages infant to 8 (or infant to grade 2).

The books I loved as a child are the books I’ve begun purchasing for my own children. My mom actually brought me a bunch of my old childhood books the last time my parents visited me. In order to instill a lifetime of reading in my sons, I try to read to them as often as I can. In no particular order, here are the books that influenced my childhood.

Stand Alone Books

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson

Corduroy by Don Freeman – one of my very favorites

Stellaluna by Janell Cannon

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein – the Boy is ungrateful and the Tree is an enabler, but we can teach from it…
